NFL concussion fallout raises red flags in NASCAR

FILE - In this Feb. 19, 2012, file photo, Michael Waltrip climbs out of his car after his qualifying attempt for the NASCAR Daytona 500 auto race at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. If Waltrip really wanted to sit down and count up all the concussions he has sustained over a NASCAR career that stretches back nearly 30 years, he'd certainly hit 10 _ and probably keep counting. Safety improvements since Dale Earnhardt's death in 2001 have gone a long way toward preventing head injuries today, and NASCAR officials have taken steps to improve the way they identify and treat concussions. But Waltrip knows that won't undo all the hits he took in the 1980s and '90s.
